Into the Wilderness: Donaldson, Emmons and Seward

Seward summit

Seward summit

The Seward Range is the westernmost hikes in the High Peaks. Known for its wilderness and all four peaks are trail-less. Being a day hiker I’d only get to three of the four – Seward, Donaldson, Emmons – and Seymour will have to wait for another day.

Originally, I planned to hike up Calkins herdpath and down via Ward (so I didn’t have to basically reclimb Dondaldson) but luckily I had my Counsin’s Dave trail notes from his hike. In all capital letters and bold there was a note: “DO NOT ATTEMP THE WARD BROOK ROUTE AS IT IS EVEN STEEPER!!!”. Ok. Gotcha. Scratch that idea. Reports of some campers confirmed his thoughts. They described it as climbing up on all fours. Thanks but no thanks.

I’ve heard that this is one very, very long hike and reports of 14 hours+. I’m always fighting daylight on those trailess paths. It is one thing to be using a headlight on a marked maintained flat trail and a different story off-trail. 4am wake up call it is! Continue reading

Basin and Saddleback: Peak Perfection

Saddleback and BasinFinally, I got the hike I so desperately wanted. Don’t get me wrong I know that the trail-less peaks are part of the game and I save them for the not so perfect weather days but the past two hikes have been long and filled with slogging through the rain and mud. But I got a perfect weather day for an amazing hike.

This was one of the few times that I didn’t use my guidebook. I had the pages with me but they had the trail in reverse so was more confusing compared to a write up I found online. You miss some details like a heads up on elevation gain but I’d rather go up the Saddleback cliffs than go down. But that’s just me.

Saddleback and BasinThis is one hike that I have been a bit nervous about – mainly around the Saddleback Cliffs. I’ve heard stories of hikers turning back upon arriving at the cliffs or being stuck too terrified to go either up or down. I don’t want to oversell it – I’ve also heard hikers say that it isn’t as bad as the stories. The cliffs are non-technical rock climbing and you are exposed so no one wants to slip. But more on that later…

From the Garden parking lot it is the usual easy 3.5 miles in to John Brook Lodge. It’s mostly flat and you start getting integrated to the “woods” but like so many trails in the ADKs adds some mileage and time to your day. Continue reading

Mud, Swamps, Bogs and Rain: Panther Peak and Couchsachraga

Panther Peak and CouchsachragaAs a solo day hiker there are only so many weekends and only so many summits I can ascent in one day. What to do? Renting a cabin in the ADKs to use as a basecamp and save on the drive time seemed like a great hiking vacation – with all the comforts of a camp (i.e. hot showers, hot food and nice cold cocktails).

Oh it is always the best laid plans. Which is to say that my plan of hiking every other day (a total of four hikes) and focusing on the ADK Loj and John Brooks trails didn’t quite happen. Rain and lightening storms will do that. My first hiking day called for steady rain and Saddleback and Basin are two mountains that I do not want to do on wet and slippery days. Panther and Couchsachraga it is!

It is a hike known for being muddy – even in August – and not the epic views of others. I prefer to save the “good” hikes for those clear weather days. And why not trek up a muddy hike after several days of rain to make it extra fun.

The Upper Works trailhead isn’t close to anywhere. Don’t get me wrong the 90min drive from Wilmington was better than my 3 hr+ from Vermont. I just didn’t think I’d still have that kind of drive time with a basecamp in the High Peaks. Oh well. Continue reading

Street and Nye: Mud, Rivers and Lesson Learned

Street and Nye Trail Map

A week after climbing Dix I was feeling the hiking itch in full swing. With some rain and cloud cover in the forecast, a couple viewless peaks were the perfect remedy. Nye and Street are not known for having the epic views that so many summits in the Adirondack’s provide but are great to do on those rainy and cloudy days. Even with the clouds, starting from the Loj, passing by Heart Lake covered in mist and fog made for a peaceful beginning to the day.

I was prepared for the water crossing at Indian Pass Brook and early light rain showers with spare change of cloths, rain gear, etc. But what I didn’t bank on was how the falling water from the trees and tight trailess herdpath would make any planning useless. I was basically soaked the entire day  from the wet trees brushing me. All. Day. Long. The upside I made a quick pace, barely breaking for water or food and the lack of enjoyable weather meant that I didn’t stop and smell the roses per sea.

What I was not prepared for – how much mud. Street and Nye aren’t known for being muddy but I did wear my gaiters and boy am I glad I did. Everything after the river crossing at 1.2 miles was covered in mud. At one point stepping onto what I thought was solid ground only to find myself calf-deep. Yep that is awesome.

Nye offers no views. Not a one. Basically just a pathetic marker on a tree in the middle of other trees. And to add insult to injury isn’t even 4,000 feet but is an official 46er due to the original measuring. Oh how wrong they were. Continue reading

Boom. Dix is Done.

Dix summit – #21.

The mountains have been calling for some time and I finally ventured out for the perfect inaugural ADK46 hike of the season. The ADK weather gods were in full force. A bit of a chill (yes I was the only one in shorts) so there were no bugs in sight but warm enough that I wasn’t cold and a full day of sun to boot. The wind at the summit dropped the temperature a good notch but I always pack a vest and hat.

Being Memorial Day weekend I was sure there would be crowds particularly at the more trafficked trailheads so I decided to go the trail less traveled and come from Dix via Round Pound (vs. approaching via Hunters Pass). It paid off in spades. Enough peeps to not worry that if I broke my leg that I’d have to crawl out but not a highway. Just the way I like it.

Dix is no joke of a hike and being the sixth tallest I wouldn’t expect it to be. Going up via Round Pound adds an additional 300 feet of elevation gain compared to the Hunters Pass route and my legs sure felt it by the end of day. Continue reading

Yep. This girl is going to be an Aunt!

Last (1)That is right my baby sister is going to have a baby! Words can’t describe how thrilled I am to be an Aunt. I’m already planning on the fun times – teaching her to swear, spit,  jump into mud puddles, jump off cliffs – you know all the fun stuff that good little girls are supposed to do:)

In all seriousness, I’m so happy for Isabel and Kyle with their pending bundle of joy. It still amazes me that Isabel is literally growing a human life inside of her. #mindblown.

I can’t wait for “Sweet Baby Girl” to arrive! I’ll be taking a week from work to help the parents to be in all the other things of life – laundry, cleaning, cooking, food-shopping – so when their little bundle of joy sleeps so can they (I’m sure they are going to need it!). Continue reading
